Rabbits have been a part of my "Farmer Girl Life" for the past 20 years...it's time to share the adventure.

On the farm ~ making saurkraut -
Well, I'm patiently waiting for the right project to weave with the wonderful yarn I've spun from Darnelle, in the meantime however Rachel gave me a wonderful cookbook I am Grateful for Christmas and I've already begun to make some of the wonderful recipes inside! Saturday we started to make Sauerkraut and being the girls that we are we wanted pink kraut so we used a red cabbage. It's already beginning to "sour" so we'll be having a delicious meal this week maybe a cheese souffle with home baked bread and kraut! In the meantime all the garden catalogues are coming in so I'm daydreaming about the perfect garden ~ a new variety of fig ~ Atreana~ to grow and make into a fig cake, and the basils I'm going to try.

AS Rachel said there's no place like home and she's getting everyone in the holiday spirit including Darnelle our English Angora Rabbit! He is the softest of soft and when you have such a pet you "pluck" them when they are ready to shed. This prevents matting and also it provides a wonderfully soft fiber for spinning into yarn. It is some of the softest and warmest of wools - I have just finished spinning his fur from the last plucking and will have to come up with a special project on the loom!

There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays...
I officially arrived home yesterday afternoon, tired but excited for break! So far I've enjoyed several of my favorite things in life: a hummus and nooch sandwich, reading, and my rabbit Darnell. Right now I'm reading one of my favorite authors, Chuck Palahniuk. His writing is raw, real, stripped down. He isn't afraid of who he is, or anything else for that matter, and it's reflected in his writing. I love it!

Sandwiches and the nearing of Christmas Break
About the Photos: Matt with his recycling bucket full of plants. He wasn't sure how to transport them, so I suggested putting them in his recycle bin. I thought it was magnificent.
A photo of my delicious veggie hummus sandwich. I took this before I put Annie's Woodstock Dressing on top..mmm...
I love sandwiches. Sandwiches sandwiches sandwiches. There's just something about two slices of wholesome tasty bread with some thing awesome in between. Today it's been hummus and nooch for breakfast and hummus, nooch, and lots and lots of veggies for lunch along with a vegan brownie for dessert. The perfect pick me up on a day of studying and after saying good bye to Mattie who went home today!

Reading Day at UNC
Today is a lovely reading day at UNC.
Last night I went to the Davis Flash rave. Basically a bunch of exam stressed students all to into the library and play music and crowd surf. So many people that I just felt rather squished, fun though.
Before the rave, I prepared dinner for my friends Swati and Tannyce. Well, that's not exactly accurate, Swati and I prepared dinner for Tannyce, who had three exams that day and was tired and stressed... So we loaded her up with comfort food: instant mashed taters, Annie's Mac and Cheese, and a pasta dish that I'll selfishly admit that I made for myself, but with plenty to spare. :) I filled my plastic take out box at the dining hall with bow tie pasta, fresh spinach, cherry tomatoes, and raw mushrooms. I sauteed them all up in my big purple pan with plenty of garlic and some olive oil, then threw in some dried thyme and of course the pasta. Though I have to admit I prefer the food we cook at Home, it was comfort food enough for me and fuel for dancing in Davis Library...

This is Jake my first rooster! I picked him out of a box of chickens at the feed store three years ago. He's been great ~ calm and friendly ~ and always looking after his girls! He's not quite ready for Christmas though as he is still eating pumpkins from fall. This one turned into a great water bowl after all the rain we had. Right now I'm looking forward to my piles of garden catalogs and planning the perfect garden in January ~ it's always so perfect then, there are never insects, weeds or disease!
Today I'll be doing some weaving and spinning as I prepare to make some holiday gifts.
